## UTM parameters, in one minute

- **utm_source:** Where the click comes from: x, linkedin, newsletter, google. Required by most tools.
- **utm_medium:** The kind of channel: social, email, cpc, referral, video. Required by most tools.
- **utm_campaign:** The push this link belongs to: september-launch, black-friday.
- **utm_term:** For paid search: the keyword. Otherwise optional.
- **utm_content:** Tells two links in the same place apart: button vs footer, image vs text.
- **Case and spaces:** Always lowercase, hyphens instead of spaces. Analytics tools treat X and x as different sources.

## Why add UTMs at all?

Without them, a click from a newsletter, a post on X or a paid ad all arrive as "direct" or as the bare referrer. UTMs tell your analytics exactly which link brought the visit, so you can see which posts and campaigns turned into sign-ups and revenue rather than just visits.

## What a tracked short link adds

A UTM link is long and easy to mangle. No. The last eight links are kept in your own browser so you can copy them again. Clear removes them.

### Should I use uppercase in campaign names?

No. Most tools are case-sensitive, so "Launch" and "launch" become two campaigns. The builder lowercases for you.
