Filters and segments
Narrow any report to the visitors you care about, save the combination as a segment, and annotate the chart with notes.
A filter narrows every report on the page at once. A segment is a filter stack you gave a name so you can put it back on in one click. Both live in the top bar, and both end up in the URL, so a filtered view is a link.
Three ways to add a filter
- Click a row in any breakdown card. Fastest by far, and it is what the cards are for.
- The Filter button in the top bar, for a dimension with no row to click, or an operator other than is.
- Pick a segment from the segment menu, which applies a whole stack at once.
What you can filter on
| Group | Dimensions |
|---|---|
| Page | Page, Entry page, Exit page, Hostname |
| Source | Channel, Referrer, Post, UTM source, UTM medium, UTM campaign |
| Location | Country, Region, City |
| Technology | Device, Browser, OS, Language |
| Behaviour | Goal |
Operators are is, is not, contains, does not contain, starts with and ends with. Up to 20 filters can apply at once, which is far more than anybody needs.
Tip. Contains on the page dimension is the workhorse:
/blog/gives you the whole blog as one number, without listing every post.
Segments
When you find yourself rebuilding the same stack every Monday, save it. Open the segment menu and choose Save current filters…, or manage them under Site settings › Segments.
Build the filters you want
A segment holds between 1 and 20 conditions.
Name it for the people, not the filters
Paying visitors from social tells you something six months later. channel is social + revenue does not.
Apply it to any report
The segment menu sits in the top bar on every report, next to the period. Selecting All visitors takes it off again.
Two dimensions cannot be stored in a segment — exit page and hostname — because reports cannot be scoped by them on the server. The dialog warns you and leaves them out rather than saving something that would quietly not work.
Notes
Notes are annotations on the trend chart, at a moment in time. They exist because a spike four weeks ago is useless if nobody remembers what caused it.
Add one from the Add note button on the chart, or by clicking the point where it belongs. Write it as the thing that happened — "Launched on Product Hunt", "Switched pricing to annual" — up to 2,000 characters. It then appears as a marker on the chart for everyone in the workspace, whatever period they are looking at.
Notes can also be added through the API and from an AI assistant over MCP, which makes "add a note that we shipped the new onboarding today" a one-line job at the end of a deploy.
